TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University Swim and Dive team had a strong showing at their 4-day long Heartland Conference Championship meet from February 11th-14th at the Vigo County Aquatic Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. The swimmers competed in multiple events and showed their hard work in the pool. Many athletes earned top finishes, personal bests, and even broke records, making it a successful meet for the team.
February 12th
Senior Sydney Grisier (Bryan) had a great meet and smashed many records. Grisier competed in the 1-meter diving. She made it into the A finals with a score of 232.20, placing 7th overall in the conference.
Sophomore Jami Baker (Lowell, Ind.) competed in the 500-yard freestyle and was originally seeded 10th but ended up advancing to A finals and placing 7th overall in the conference with a time of 5:48.71. That gives Baker the school record!
Grisier, Baker, freshman Laina Camp (Marion/Harding), and junior Juliana Brooks (Canton/McKinley) competed in the 200 free relay. They ended up placing 5th overall with a time of 2:04.23, which gives them the school record! They also competed in the 400 medley relay, placing 6th with a time of 5:27.17. That will put them second all-time in the record books. Along with the 400 medley relay, Brooks broke the 50-yard backstroke record in the relay (37.02)!
Sophomore Landon Gardner (Whitehall, Mich./Grand Haven) competed in the 200-yard IM, placing 15th with a time of 2:26.31. That puts him second all-time in the record books!
Senior Riley Bruns (Maria Stein/Marion Local) competed hard and had a solid performance. Bruns competed in the 50-yard freestyle, placing 22nd with a time of 25.89.
February 13th
Baker had an impressive performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. She made it back to the A finals, placing 5th with a time of 1:13.34.
Brooks also had an impressive day in the water. She competed in the 200-yard free, placing 18th with 2:40.75. Her last individual event of the day was the 100-yard backstroke, placing 15th overall with a time of 1:20.55.
Camp, Baker, Grisier, and Brooks competed in the 200 medley relay, taking 6th place with a time of 2:21.37. That puts them second all-time in the record books.
Gardner competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing 15th, with a time of 1:13.05. That puts him third all-time in the record books.
February 14th
Grisier had an outstanding performance in 3-meter diving. She took 6th place overall in the A final with her final score being a 245.75. That puts her at the top of the record books!
Baker's final individual event from the week was the 200-yard breaststroke. She made it to the A finals, placing 6th overall with a time of 2:43.71.
Brooks competed in the 200-yard backstroke, placing 16th with a time of 3:00.19. That puts her third all-time in the record books.
Grisier, Baker, Camp, and Brooks final race of the entire meet was the 400 free relay. They took 6th overall with a time of 4:46.05. That puts them at the top of the record books!
Gardner's final event for the season was the 200-yard breaststroke. He placed 16th with a time of 2:42.43. That puts him second all-time in the record books.
The Beavers put up an extraordinary fight this past week, coming out with an overall score of 144. That also gives the women a new team score record! They had a phenomenal season with many broken records and PRs. Go Beavers!
