Beavers sweep twin-bill with Oberlin

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team had it rolling on both sides of the ball in a sweep of visiting Oberlin College on a frigid April 7, 2026. Oberlin came into Allen County with a 12-8 mark, but the Yeowomen left 12-10 as the Beavers allowed just four runs over 14 innings. The hosts improved to 11-9 as they wrapped up a string of 12 straight home contests, dating back to their return from Florida on March 5!

Trailing 1-0, Bluffton went to work in the bottom of the first when sophomore Madison Brentlinger (Indian Lake) doubled over the third base bag in her first game at the top of the order. She trotted home following a Brooklynn Bakle (Paulding) base hit up the middle. Bakle crossed the dish when Grace Gronberg (Danville) reached on an Oberlin error. Gronberg made it 3-1 after a Leah Ramirez (Elida) single to center.

Oberlin knotted the score with a pair of tallies in the third, but sophomore Tianna Galbraith (Wayne/Elmwood) made it 4-3 in the home half with her RBI single that picked up Ramirez.

A pair of Yeowomen miscues sent Bakle scurrying home for a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth before the visitors imploded with four errors in the sixth inning. Bakle notched a bunt single before a three-base error allowed her to race home on the heels of Brentlinger! Julia Tegeder (Hamilton) crossed the dish, making it 8-3 and giving the Beavers game one despite a pair of miscues in the seventh. Oberlin finished the lidlifter with an eye-popping nine errors.

Gronberg notched her second complete-game victory in as many days, improving to 6-3 on the season. She allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in seven innings. The sophomore ace finished with eight punchouts against just two walks.

Bakle was a perfect 3-of-3 with three runs scored. Brentlinger was 2-of-4 with two runs scored.

Game two was a pitcher's duel through the first four and a half innings before Bluffton broke through with three runs in the home fifth. An Oberlin error gave Bluffton's offense life as Brentlinger and Bakle made it 2-0 when Grant's grounder to second base was too hot to handle. Julia Tegeder (Hamilton) pushed the lead to three when she crossed the dish thanks to a wild pitch.

Oberlin trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth, however, the home team responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Senior Ella McCombs (Springfield/Southeastern) laced an RBI single to center that picked up Ramirez and Brentlinger singled home junior Taryn Hampton (Fostoria/Hopewell Louden) for a 5-1 spread that was more than enough to hand Bluffton its third win in two days.

Freshman Klary McKay (Salem/Mahoning County Career Tech Center) needed just 79 pitches to dispatch the Yeowomen in her complete-game victory. She scattered eight hits across seven innings, allowing just one unearned run, with two strikeouts.

Bakle, who finished the day with five hits, and Hampton both smacked two safeties in the nightcap.

Bluffton will have one day to rest up before it hits the road for the first time in over a month! The Beavers travel to Olivet for a doubleheader with the Comets at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9.
